A Young Super Star Cluster in the Nuclear Region of Ngc 253
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present observations of a massive star cluster near the nuclear region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. The peak of near-infrared emission, which is spatially separated by 4 from the kinematic center of the galaxy, is coincident with a super star cluster whose properties we examine with low-resolution (R ∼ 1,200) infrared CTIO spectroscopy and optical/near-infrared HST imaging. Extinction, measured from [Fe II] lines, is estimated at AV = 17.7±2.6. The age of the cluster is estimated at 5.7 Myr, based on Brγ equivalent width for an instantaneous burst using Starburst99 modeling. However, a complex star formation history is inferred from the presence of both recombination emission and photospheric CO absorption. The ionizing photon flux has a lower limit of 7.3±2.5 × 1053 s−1, corrected for extinction. Assuming a Kroupa IMF, we estimate a cluster mass of ∼ 1.4+0.4 −0.5 × 10 7 M⊙. We observe a strong Wolf-Rayet signature at 2.06 μm and report a weak feature at 2.19 μm which may be due to a massive stellar population, consistent with the derived mass and age of this cluster. We discuss HST FOS ultraviolet spectroscopy and NICMOS near-infrared photometry of four young super star clusters in the central region of the irregular starburst galaxy NGC 1569. The new observations coupled with previous HST WFPC2 photometry and ground-based optical spectroscopy allow us to isolate and age-date the hot and cool stellar components of these massive clusters. We analyze the two ...
متن کاملWatching the Birth of Super Star Clusters
Subarcsecond infrared and radio observations yield important information about the formation of super star clusters from their surrounding gas. We discuss the general properties of ionized and molecular gas near young, forming SSCs, as illustrated by the prototypical young, forming super star cluster nebula in the dwarf galaxy NGC 5253. This super star cluster appears to have a gravitationally ...
متن کاملDetection of a Super Star Cluster as the Ionizing Source in the Low Luminosity Agn
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet STIS imaging and spectroscopy of the low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) NGC 4303 have identified the previously detected UV-bright nucleus of this galaxy, as a compact, massive and luminous stellar cluster. The cluster with a size (FWHM) of 3.1 pc, and an ultraviolet luminosity log L 1500Å (erg s Å)= 38.33 is identified as a nuclear super star cluster (SSC) like...
متن کاملPAH emission variations within the resolved starbursts of NGC 253 and NGC 1808 ⋆
In order to better characterise the usefulness of PAH emission as a tracer of star formation, we have undertaken a programme of 3 µm narrowband imaging of a sample of nearby template galaxies covering a wide range of metallicity, star formation activity, and nuclear activity. In the present paper we present first results of this programme: high spatial resolution images of PAH feature emission ...
متن کاملStar clusterings in the Carina complex : UBV RI photometry of NGC 3324 and Loden 165 ⋆
We report on U BV RI photometry of two 5 ′ × 5 ′ fields in the region of the young open cluster NGC 3324. One of our fields covers the core region, while the other is closer to the tidal radius of the cluster. Our study provides the first CCD photometry of NGC 3324. We find that the cluster is very young and probably contains several pre Main Sequence (MS) stars. 25 members are identified on th...
